Backup/Restore

For Managed RHEL VMs we differentiate between image-based and agent-based backup. Also you can create your own snapshots of the machine.

Image-based Backup

The Managed RHEL VMs are protected with image-based backup. This backup process for VMs creates a snapshot of the Operating System and the data associated with it. The default backup policy is set to 30 days. The following backup policies can be applied:

Backup ScheduleRetention Period
Daily7 days
Daily14 days
Daily30 days
Daily90 days
Weekly365 days

To change the backup policy use the day-2 operation Change Backup Policy. Backups taken with the older policy will remain available until their retention period expires.

Note

Swisscom cannot guarantee that the backup of a VM will take place every day at the same time of the day. Only one backup-window is defined, which will start e.g. at 8pm for all VM's. The duration depends on the number of VMs and the amount of new data which needs to be backed up.

After a Managed RHEL VM has been backed up at least once, it is considered protected. The image-based backup feature provides the ability to restore a complete Managed RHEL VM or to recover individual files and folders.

The restore can be done by Swisscom upon service request ticket from customer. Please set the VM into Temp Admin state and provide VM name and hostname in the ESC Service Requestopen in new window ticket.
